Hilliard City Council to consider dual approaches to LGBTQ-protection legislation June 14 ThisWeek group Hilliard City Council members are poised to consider two ordinances that would provide broader civil-rights protections to the LGBTQ community. Each of the ordinances is scheduled for a second and final reading at 7 p.m. June 14 at the Hilliard Municipal Building, 3800 Municipal Way. One of the ordinances is more than a year in the making. City Council also accepted public comment on the legislation May 24, and eight people spoke in favor of it. One, Dennis Ginty, a Hilliard City Schools resident, told council members he is a gay man who avoids speaking publicly, but “there are times you need to stand up (and) do the right thing.”

Discussion of LGBTQ protections on April 12 Hilliard City Council agenda ThisWeek group Hilliard City Council will continue discussion about how to advance legislation to protect members of the LGBTQ community from discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. That discussion will continue at council’s committee-of-the-whole meeting, scheduled at 6 p.m. April 12 at the Hilliard Municipal Building, 3800 Municipal Way. It will be the third one-hour session for discussing the proposed legislation, following meetings March 8 and March 22. In its current incarnation, the ordinance would add marital and family status as protected classes concerning employment discrimination and it would include marital status, gender identity and sexual orientation concerning discrimination in housing and public accommodations, council President Pete Marsh said.
