Victorville Council approves $300K grant for homeless shelter, but major funding uncertain
Victorville Daily Press
The Victorville City Council has approved a land purchase and a $300,000 grant for the largest homeless shelter in the High Desert, but a construction date and a major funding source for the project remain uncertain.
During its regular meeting on Tuesday, the City Council authorized an agreement with the San Bernardino County Flood Control District for $70,000, which allows Victorville to take ownership of nearly 2 acres near the Mojave River for the project.
The 168-bed, 24-hour Wellness and Recuperative Care Center is expected to be built on 4 acres overall near Eva Dell Park.
The frenetic scene inside a California hospital struggling to keep pace with the coronavirus pandemic
Print article APPLE VALLEY, Calif. - The hospital spreads over a block along Happy Trails Highway, which splits this high-desert town in half as it runs low and wide down a gentle hill. The Chamber of Commerce, featuring a rearing, life-size model of the mid-century movie-star horse Trigger, is empty. “Intermission,” reads the marquee of the High Desert Center for the Arts, which sits at the edge of this longtime home of antique Hollywood royalty, the singing cowboy Roy Rogers and his co-star wife, Dale Evans.
