numbers. that in 2014, that problem was a quarter of what it is today. we are being overwhelmed in extraordinary conditions at the border. thousands and thousands of people over the week come to the border with their children or children alone and the border patrol facilities that are designed to have people come in and go through the book-in procedure, they re supposed to be in our custody for a very short time. they re being overwhelmed. so the conditions are what they are, because this unmitigated flow continues. are those conditions acceptable to you? they re not acceptable to anybody. but what is the alternative? the border patrol is required to take these people into custody, and put them in proceedings. the adult males and adult females that don t have children will be referred to detention at i.c.e. as quickly as possible. the families and children the children will be moved and transferred to the hhs shelter nearby. or somewhere in the country. and the families are all
when i was on the air with you from that brownsville shelter, the hhs shelter, the former walmart that held over 1,000 young boys ages 10 to 17, i told you at the time these are people tanked with taking good care, licensed social workers of the separated children and in their care from no fault of their own because the trump administration ripped them away from their parents. this contractor, bcms, wrote emails to health and human services essentially saying this is unacceptable and we need to come up with a plan so that this does not happen again. it was elevated all the way to commander jonathan white, who was the man in charge of spear heading the communications for hhs who basically said confirmed the anger we could see in these emails. he said you did the right thing for raising this and hhs called i.c.e. in the middle of the night to ultimately get these kids reunified. jacob soboroff, thank you
their parents. they were sitting in a parking lot in a white mass senator van, six to eight kids crammed into each van, for as you said, up to 39 hours, and the reason is port isabelle, the i.c.e. adult-only processing center that was supposed to take them in and reunite them with their parents just wasn t ready despite the fact that hhs called and gave them the heads up twice before these kids were brought over, and the idea that the first child was able to get off this van and see their parents after waiting 11 hours is it is hard to believe, but i feel like we ve said that way too many times about this man made separation crisis. you ve managed to get your hands on some internal emails, basically the contractor working with the government and watching over the kids flipping out over what s going on. it s completely inappropriate in the eyes of the people that are supposed to take care of these kids. when i was on the air with you from that brownsville shelter, the hhs shelter,
