COC Focuses On Training For Essential Workforce Roles During COVID-19 Pandemic While College of the Canyons has been largely limited to remote instruction during the fall 2020 semester, the school has been able to offer in-person instruction for more than 50 essential infrastructure class sections. The college followed the necessary state and county protocols in order to receive the necessary clearance to begin hosting on-campus classes for students enrolled in a variety of essential infrastructure programs. Those programs include welding, culinary arts, automotive technician, medical laboratory technician, emergency medical technician (EMT), land surveying, construction management and technology, and nursing. A number of students have secured employment as a result of the hands-on instruction and our nursing graduates and 37 EMT graduates will qualify for national licensure examinations. ....

Despite several challenges, Sukhmeet Dhillon graduated from the COC MLT program in June and passed the ASCP exam on the first try. Despite challenges during the pandemic, the College of the Canyons Medical Laboratory Technician Class of 2020 passed the Clinical Pathologists National Board Exam on the first try. While it’s not the first time an entire COC Medical Laboratory Technician cohort has passed the ASCP National Board Exam on the first try, the Class of 2020 will go down in history nevertheless. The 13 MLT students had to quickly adapt to remote instruction, but they also had to deal with clinical site displacement, which jeopardized their ability to complete the training required for graduation in June. ....
COC Medical Laboratory Technician Class Of 2020 Passes Certification Exam Despite Challenges College of the Canyons announced this past Wednesday that its Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) class of 2020 students have all passed their board exams on their first attempts. The students passed the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) National Board Exam, a certification exam for laboratory technicians, on their first tries despite challenges due to the pandemic. “Several students had to face clinical site displacement because sites were unable to train students due to COVID restrictions,” said Dr. Hencelyn Chu, an MLT professor at the college. “Although there were many challenges, all of the students graduated on time and passed the national board exams the first time that they took the exam.” ....
