(Archived document, may contain errors) May 31, 1977 HEALTH CARE COSTS AND THE FREE MARKET INTRODUCTION In recent years the American health care system has become the subject of controversy. Though nearly all critics agree that the quality of health care has improved, many find that the improvement in quality has not been commensurate with the Limcreases in costs. In 1975, the United States spent $118.5 billion, or 8.2% of its GNP, on health care; this was an increase from $38.9 billion, or 5.9% of the GNP, in 19
you are not going to throw me off of medicaid. people began to fight back. we have to continue that. the republican agenda and tax breaks for millionaires and massive cuts to health care. a great increase in expenditures for the military budget. not acknowledging the reality of climate change. all of those ideas are way out of touch. our job is to rally the american people to demand that the u.s. congress represent the middle class and not just the 1%. what is your opinion on this republican notion that obamacare is going to explode and it s in a death spiral and going to explode? the evidence suggests that is not the case. on the other hand, what is fair to acknowledge is deductibles are too high and premiums are too high. while obamacare has slowed down, the rate of health care
most because the law mandates coverage for those who pre-existing conditions. caps on out-of-pocket costs have saved many families from bankruptcy. i remind you that bankruptcy personal bankruptcy is caused more by health costs than anything else. let s look at costs because you re hearing a lot of people on tv tell you that obamacare has made premium costs go up. now, this is done by the kaiser family foundation who has stu studied this for a long time. they divided it in two five-year periods, between 2006 and 2011 and 2011 and 2016. between 2006 and 2011 health care increases were up 31%. since then they re up 20%. it s important to note when you re hearing people say that obamacare has caused premiums to rise. premiums were always going up. if you were a voter who thaw the law went too far, there s a good chance you voted for donald trump who won those votes by 67
makes to you on the election overall. the white house has been pretty consistent throughout. we haven t heard from them today. we will hear them take questions in about an hour on these numbers specifically, but what they ve been saying throughout is, look at the overall picture. the 20 million more people in america now have insurance where they couldn t find something affordable before. that the vast majority of people are getting subsidies. the vast majority of people are finding an affordable plan, and that when you look at health care increases over the last several years, the last five our six years, these are the smallest increases on record. of course, next year that s going to change a little bit. but democrats will hold that the increases, the overall people are going to be paying would have been more if obama care been exist. so just depends who s voice is out there is stronger to the voters, wolf. michelle, thanks very much. alison, thanks to you as well. get more on al
got? william? well, we re not looking to hire in this environment. the market is it the environment? would you be hiring if it was a different climate? opportunity for american manufacturing is unbelievable. if you look at natural resources, the growth in the global economy, the innovation history in america, our human capital, american manufacturing has a once in a lifetime opportunity to expand and once again dominate the world, and it breaks my heart that at 40 years old, relatively young business owner, my outlook on the future is not what it should be. gina, what about you quickly? you have a fire in the belly if you re an entrepreneur as it is. i would say that the opportunities with our business and growth, they have certainly been stymied years ago, especially with this administration, because there s so much uncertainty out there. we never know what s coming down the pike, and we don t know with health care increases and everything else what we re going to do.
