In California, Michigan and New York, how urban agriculture combats food insecurity

This story originally appeared in Eos and is republished here as part of Covering Climate Now, a global journalistic collaboration to strengthen coverage of the climate story. This was also part of a series on food security in CSA News magazine. In times of crisis, people become really passionate about their food supply, says Rachel Surls, sustainable food systems adviser for the Los Angeles County Cooperative Extension. We saw a boom in urban agriculture during the recession in 2008, and we’re seeing it now. This observation isn’t confined to sunny California: Across the country, consumers are getting creative when it comes to their produce. Outlets such as Forbes, CBS and the BBC have likened the uptick of interest in gardening to a modern renaissance of wartime victory gardens. When you’re not sure grocery store shelves will have the produce you’re looking for, what better assurance than growing it yourself?

NYC Mayor's Office Urges New Yorkers to Slash Beef by 50 Percent

Shares The New York City Mayor’s Office of Animal Welfare is encouraging residents to reduce their meat consumption in an effort to meet the city’s meat reduction goals. These goals are part of the city’s OneNYC strategy to fight the climate crisis and ensure healthy lives by eating less meat. An email sent to residents points out that individual choices contribute to progress, and eating less meat is better for people, the planet, and the animals. The email also includes guidance developed in partnership with World Animal Protection’s meat reduction campaign on how residents can reduce their meat consumption, including incorporating Meatless Mondays, reducing beef by 50 percent, phasing out processed meats, and replacing meat dishes with plant-based proteins.

Who Is Running For Bronx Borough President?

arrow As the city s most impoverished borough, the Bronx has seen its deep-rooted problems exacerbated by the pandemic. It currently ranks as the state s unhealthiest county, with heart disease and obesity afflicting many in the borough. While the Bronx s unemployment rate stood at 4% in December 2019, it has soared as high as 24% during the pandemic, leaving scores of Bronx residents jobless. But it doesn t mean all of the Bronx s successes have been obliterated. Construction of new residences remains strong across the borough, though other large-scale projects including the construction of four Metro-North stations along an existing Amtrak line and the Kingsbridge National Ice Center remain in limbo for at least five years.
