Infectious disease expertDr. Edsel Salvana (PPD photo) MANILA - An infectious disease expert is advising the public to continue wearing face masks amid the rising cases of Omicron subvariants in the country. In a Facebook post Wednesday, Dr. Edsel Salvana said masks should be worn even outdoors as the Omicron BA.5 subvariant is "super contagious". "They're finding that out in other countries AFTER they removed their mask mandates. Good thing we're a lot more cautious in the Philippines," he said. Salvana noted that current vaccines continue to prevent severe disease but are less effective for preventing infection and the use of face masks is still significant to avoid more infections while waiting for updated vaccines. Health authorities say Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 are highly transmissible, as transmissible as measles, which is considered the most infectious viral illness in humans. Being outdoors provided good protection against infection with pre ....

(File photo) MANILA - Booster shots of the Covid-19 vaccine are an effective protection against the Omicron BA.2.12.1 subvariant, the vaccine expert panel (VEP) said Wednesday. In a televised public briefing, VEP chairperson Dr. Nina Gloriani said the protection from the primary series of Covid-19 vaccines is not enough against Omicron subvariants BA.1 and BA.2. "[The] mRna vaccines, very clear after two doses, ang efficacy nitong mga bakuna bumababa hanggang 10 percent against Omicron variant. Pag binigyan ng third dose, two to four weeks after bababa rin ito to about 59 to 75 percent. After another two months bababa pa ng 51 to 64 percent and after three months na sa 49 [to] 50 percent na lang (their efficacy goes down to 10 percent against Omicron variant. When given third dose, two to four weeks after, it will also go down to about 59 to 75 percent. After another two months, it will go down to 51 to 64 percent and after three months to 49 [to] 50 percent)," she said. The ....
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire (File photo) MANILA - The slight uptick in Covid-19 cases may have been caused by campaign sorties, increased mobility, and non-compliance to health protocols, a health official said Monday. Over the weekend, the Department of Health reported that 13 areas outside the National Capital Region logged an increase in Covid-19 cases. These include Angeles City, Batanes, Butuan City, Catanduanes, Davao City, Eastern Samar, Ilocos Norte, Kalinga, Marinduque, Olongapo City, Quirino, Surigao del Sur, and Tarlac City. In a Teleradyo Sakto interview, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the recorded increase in Covid-19 cases is not significant as it has not overwhelmed the healthcare system. "Marami pong pwedeng dahilan ang pagtaas ng kaso, unang-una, syempre, 'yung ating minimum public health standards. Pagkatapos nakikita natin 'yung mga crowding talaga (There are many possible causes of the increase in cases, first of all, ....
(File photo) MANILA - Restrictions and providing incentives could encourage fully vaccinated individuals to receive their booster shots, a health expert said Thursday. In an online forum, Philippine College of Physicians president Dr. Maricar Limpin echoed the suggestion of Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion on mobility restrictions and a reward system that may help improve the vaccination numbers, especially in areas with low coverage. "Probably, we can restrict and if the private sector can afford it, then, there can be some incentives para maenganyo natin ang mas maraming tao (so we can entice more people)," she said. She said correct information on Covid-19 vaccines and their benefits must be communicated to the public. "What is really important ay malabanan natin lahat ng maling impormasyon na kumakalat na siyang pinapaniwalaan ng marami sa mga Pilipino (is we fight the wrong information many Filipinos believe in)," Limpin said. Correct i ....
