Nine people were shot in Providenceâs Washington Park neighborhood late Thursday afternoon, in the largest mass shooting in recent history in Rhode Islandâs capital city.
The shooting on Carolina Avenue involved rival groups whoâve been engaged in a violent feud, Police Chief Hugh T. Clements Jr. said in a news conference Thursday night. Police were called at 6:47 p.m. about shots fired after gunmen in a vehicle opened fire at people, some of whom returned fire, Clements said. ....

Providence Police investigated a shooting on Carolina Avenue late Thursday.
PROVIDENCE Nine people were wounded Thursday night during what authorities describe as a targeted gunfight between local street gangs that resulted in the largest mass shooting in the city’s history, officials said.
Police officials, local politicians, faith leaders, and nonviolence workers on Friday called for an end to the violence that has spilled into the city streets almost daily. Meanwhile, investigators were pursuing leads and charges were expected later Friday. ....

First-ever Providence Public Housing murals pay homage to immigrants

Angela AGONZA Gonzalez has a newly installed set of murals located at the Hartford Park housing development. This public art project is one of several taking place throughout the city as part of the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism (ACT) Public Art Residency, an initiative of the Departments Public Art Program. The six-month residency program places artists in city facilities to engage directly with residents and staff.
PROVIDENCE Providence artist Angela “AGONZA” Gonzalez was told that long ago, immigrants built the structures of the Hartford Park public housing projects. They built them strong, she said, and they filled the community that stretches through the western edge of the city. ....
