If you want a little more sunshine, todays to your liking. I think that fog will burn off much sooner today and temperatures about where they should be this time of year. 60s, 70s to near 80. The weekend closure is having on businesses, and we are less than 24 hours away from bay to breakers, making a return to San Francisco. Look at the last minute preparations underway before thousands of runners hit the city streets. And we are going to get to those stories in just a moment. But first, were following breaking news. This is on Yerba Buena Island. Crews are battling a fire there. You see the video right there. It started just after 3 00. Firefighters say crews are facing heavy smoke and steep terrain. Now. Two fire boats are also helping put water on the flames from the bay. There they go. This is new video from the firefighting efforts. Its not clear how this fire started as you can imagine, this is impacting traffic on the bay bridge for a period of time. All eastbound lanes. They were shut down in the last 30 minutes. Two lanes. They reopened. Now heres a live look at our traffic map. And you can see that big backup right there stretching for miles. At this point, its a
Prosecutors are now asking for and what it means for the case. We begin the 6 00 hour with an update to that breaking news. Weve been following for you. All lanes on the bay bridge back open after being closed so crews could battle this at fire on yerba buena island. This all started about about three hours ago, and crews put out the flames from land and water to this video showing two fire boats right there spraying the grass. No word on what sparked that fire . No, but it is impacting traffic on the bay bridge. We can say that with certainty. Video from one of our nbc sports bay area colleagues showing a fire truck trying to get through all that. Ooh, thats tough. At one point, the eastbound lanes were closed, causing some traffic to stop and go. This is video taken about two hours ago heading into the city. Return, the ship was sunk by enemy torpedos and 900 sailor, including harold, spent five days in the water trying to fight off a swarm of sharks. It was a scene made famous in the movie jaws. I dont know how many shark, maybe a thousand. It was a bad experience. There was nothing good about it. Every time you looked around, somebody was gone. Reporter harold was one of the 300 who were saved and is now the last living survivor of that harrowing experience. The statue portrays him as that young sailor full of confidence with a little bit of swagger. This monument sits as a beacon of inspiration reminding us of the courage and resilience that defines the human spirit. Reporter later he became a bene esha police officer, fondly remembered for a 19year career helping local kids. When city leaders began searching for a unifying symbol, the choice became pretty obvious. This seemed to be a commonality between the citizens. Talking to literally hundreds of people, they kept coming up with the
Fighters fight a brush fire on Yerba Buena Island next to the bay bridge, both by land and by sea. The location, terrain and winds all made it challenging for crews to get the upper hand. The hydrants are on the north side of the bridge. The fire was on the south side, and theres only one way to get our hoses across and unfortunately we had to inconvenience everyone to stop this fire where we did. At one point, the eastbound portion of the bridge was completely shut down for more than an hour, backing up traffic for miles. Good evening. On this saturday, im cristina rendon. Firefighters were called to Yerba Buena Island after drivers on the bay bridge reported smoke at about 230 this afternoon. The brush fire broke out on the island just south of the bridge. Crews working using fireboats in their work against the flames, and the Fire Department says crews on the ground had to break through a fence to access fire hydrants on the north side of the bridge and run a hose across interstate
