The incident, which was reported to the health department in the morning of January 16, came to light only late on Monday night. Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said probably due to lack of training, the officials concerned could not store the vaccines properly. He added that a team of senior health officials will go to Silchar to review the lapses. The state health department has asked the state cold chain officer to probe into the matter.

Picture used for representational purpose only GUWAHATI: The Assam government will utilise the contribution of over Rs 100 crore made by people of the state to help the state government combat Covid-19 pandemic to purchase the vaccines for general people if Centre does not bear the entire cost. State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Centre will bear the cost of vaccines required for only the 2.9 lakh registered beneficiaries from two categories health care workers (HCWs) and frontline workers (FLWs) of the state, who will be vaccinated in the first two phases starting from Saturday. The third phase of vaccination will be for people of 50 years of age and above and those with morbidities of any age. After the completion of the vaccination of these three prioritized groups, vaccination will be carried out for the general people.
