An antioxidant found in sesame seeds may offer a degree of protection against the onset of Parkinson’s disease (PD) according to Japanese scientists, who now want to take their findings to the clinical trial phase.
The findings make for encouraging reading as the extract sesaminol is found in the sesame seed shell waste product produced during the manufacture of sesame seed oil.
“Currently there is no preventive medicine for Parkinson s disease,” states Osaka City University’s Associate Professor Akiko Kojima-Yuasa.
“We only have coping treatments.”
Along with sesaminol’s antioxidant effects, research also points to the extract’s anti-cancer effect that works by reducing the expression of proteins linked to the development and progression of cancer.
EC’s proposed Aloe ban sets dangerous precedent for natural products, says industry group The European Federation of Associations of Health Product Manufacturers (EHPM) has launched a petition defending the use of Aloe and other plants in food supplements in response to proposed changes affecting botanicals containing Hydroxyanthracene Derivatives (HADs).
The federation’s
petition seeks to counter recent plans by Member States of the European Commission (EC) to prohibit the use of hydroxyanthracene-containing extracts such as Aloe, emodin, Aloe-emodin, and Aloe preparations over safety concerns that include intestinal dysfunction.
If approved by the European Parliament, the EHPM believes that not only will the use of these botanicals be prohibited but plants such as senna, cascara and rhubarb may well be in the firing line due to their roles in improving intestinal function.

Synbiotic may boost response to iron supplementation in female athletes: Study A combination of Taiyo’s Sunfiber and IFF’s Bifidobacterium lactis BL-04 may boost iron stores in training female athletes taking low-dose iron supplements, according to a study using the Regular Girl consumer product.
Combining the synbiotic with iron supplements (140 mg per day of ferrous sulfate) led to significantly better iron status over eight weeks compared to ferrous sulfate plus placebo, report scientists from Marywood University (Scranton, PA).
“While this was a smaller sample [19 female athletes completed the study], if synbiotic supplementation can enhance the uptake of FeSO4 in ID [iron deficient] and IDEP [subclinical iron depleted] female athletes during repletion of Fe status, it could conceivably improve the Fe bioavailability of non-heme Fe sources and mixed meals (e.g. heme + non-heme sources of Fe),” wrote the researchers, led by Dr Diane
