Board begins planning for future security agreement as mayor shows willingness to let KPD officers stay in schools on interim basis


Kincannon had abruptly informed the board earlier this month she d be withdrawing some 14 city officers from KCS in mid June. The mayor also said the city still wanted to take part in talks about its involvement in security going forward.
Kristin Farley, Kincannon s communications director, confirmed she d spoken with Thomas on Wednesday morning.
At that time, Mayor Kincannon indicated she would explore a provisional arrangement, if needed, Farley told WBIR.
Board members welcomed the news, although Patti Bounds said any new agreement should make it harder for a mayor to suddenly pull out of the system s standing security pact, something she called a hasty and rash decision. ....

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. The future of school security and the future of masks will be discussed Wednesday night by Knox County school board members as they prepare for the end of a long, hard school year.
The 5 p.m. work session will be at the City County Building. The voting meeting will follow a week later. ....

Today, Austin-East students will return to school for the first full day of classes since the shooting.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Knox County Schools Superintendent said he cannot shake feelings of helplessness after Monday s officer-involved shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School.
Classes at the high school were canceled in light of the shooting, which has now been extended out to Monday, April 19. Students are scheduled to move to online-only learning on Tuesday and Wednesday. 
Today, Austin-East students will return to school for the first full day of classes since the shooting.
Do what s best for you and your family, school board member Evetty Satterfield said. If you have kids that want to come and be with their teachers, we re here and our doors are open. If you have kids that need that time to process what happened and take care of themselves, do that as well. ....
