On the night of April 23, Subhash Varma, a 53-year-old healthcare professional, and his wife Anuja returned exhausted to their flat in Dwarka, a suburb in southwestern Delhi. They had spent a harrowing day trying to get Anuja’s severely ill sister Tanuja Vidyarthi into the emergency ward at the Jaipur Golden Hospital, a designated Covid-19 treatment centre in Rohini, 22 kilometres away. A schoolteacher from Karol Bagh, Tanuja, 53, had tested positive for Covid on April 16 and rushed to the hospital after her blood oxygen level plummeted to under 70. ....

New Delhi: An Empowered Group of Officers under Niti Aayog Member for Health, Dr V K Paul have recommended extraordinary measures to ramp up oxygen provision under a Plan B to meet a surge of 6 lakh new COVID cases a day.
The report submitted about 10 days back (just days before the country saw several deaths due to lack of oxygen) group had told authorities, including the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), to take immediate measures for oxygen provision to meet a surge of 3 lakh new cases a day by April 20, and a surge of 5 lakh new cases a day by end of April. ....

This was done soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed officials at a meeting on oxygen availability that supply must be ensured in a “smooth, unhindered manner”. He said that it was important to “fix responsibility with the local administration in cases of obstruction”. The PM also stressed that the states should come down heavily on hoarding.
