Govt limits industrial use of oxygen amid spike in Covid-19 cases


Amid acute shortage of medical-grade oxygen for Covid-19 patients, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has limited the industrial use of oxygen to only nine key sectors, including steel plants, petroleum refineries, pharmaceuticals, food and water purification, among others.
The decision to restrict the industrial usage of oxygen has been taken to meet the rising demand for medical oxygen.
The supply of oxygen for industrial purposes by manufacturers and suppliers is prohibited forthwith from 22.04.2021 till further orders, according to an official statement released on Sunday.
The matter was taken up by DPIIT with all the stakeholders. The surplus oxygen available due to the temporary restriction is expected to free up its use as medical oxygen a critical component towards treating Covid-19. An empowered group, headed by DPIIT secretary Guruprasad Mohapatra has been set up to ensure requisite supplies of medical equipments, drugs ....

New Delhi, April 15 : Amid reports of shortage of medical oxygen from various parts of the country, the Centre has clarified that the present availability of oxygen is sufficient , however, it has started mapping of states with greater need of oxygen.
Of the states with greater needs of oxygen are Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Chhattisgarh. Besides, there is more consumption of medical oxygen in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Rajasthan.
Considering reports, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHF) maintained that India s daily production Capacity of medical oxygen is 7,287 metric tonne and the current stock is more than 50,000 metric tonne, more than the daily consumption of 3,842 metric tonne. ....

New Delhi: An inter-ministerial Empowered Group (EG2) of officers constituted during the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 to ensure the availability of essential medical equipment including medical oxygen to the affected states has noted that India’s daily production capacity (7287 MT) and stock (~50,000 MT) of medical oxygen, a critical component in the treatment of COVID affected patients, is comfortably more than the daily consumption (3842 MT) at present, as per the government sources. ....
