Dedicated to the study and analysis of deeply rooted, protracted, violent social conflicts, often accompanied by severe violence. In addition to analysis, we also investigate, and some of us practice, the intervention that would allow us to mitigate, to interrupt cycles of violence. Courses we teach , some version of getting to the table, negotiations, and comparative peace processes. Those of us who have studied this often think about how we get to the negotiating table, how we do the treaty, how we do the ceasefire, but we also understand that a longterm goal of most peace processes is something we call reconciliation. We understand reconciliation is less of an endpoint, terminus, than it is a process. There are many examples that show us how difficult reconciliation as conceived of as an endpoint is. And often how violent conflicts, even a century ago, will cohere around symbols that remain with us and remain obstacles for reconciliation. Today we will be talking about one of those. ....
