a summary shows bates had almost 300 hours of training since 2008 but sheriff stanley glanz said he didn t have all his gun certification records. the up instructor no longer work there is. we can t find the records she supposedly turned in. reporter: bates flatly denied the report citing multiple sources that supervisors were forced to falsify some of his training records. a spokesman for the sheriff s office told nbc news he believes the training records are true and correct. law enforcement that is engrained into him. reporter: bates family says he s the grandfather of six who survived cancer and donated thousands of dollars of equipment to the sheriff s office. he made his money working hard. he wants to give back to help people. is that wrong? reporter: again, the family of eric harris released a statement. we remain vigilant in spokeeaking
reporter: what mr. bates is referring to there is the lawyer for mr. bates believes one of the sources for this is a former sheriff s department employee who is no longer with the department and is sitting in jail accused of murder. so they are discrediting that report. the newspaper says they have five sources in all that corroborated this story. all of this very interesting. in the background here, more than a week ago we filed an open records request with the sheriff s department asking for personal records and training records for mr. bates and we were denied saying the matter was under investigation but the sheriff here in tulsa county is saying that at least some of perhaps the gun certification records might have been lost. they are trying to track those down. these questions still under a great deal of scrutiny. the records key to this
all right, brooke. here s where things kind of break down. we have requested more than a week ago the full personnel file for mr. bates. we were told by an attorney for the sheriffs department that could not be released. the sheriffs department did release a long list of the different course and training courses mr. bates had gone through over the last seven years. that does not include the field training records and who signed off on all of that. on top of that we had statements from the sheriff, his only public comments he made to a radio station a couple days ago. he acknowledged some of the gun certification records might have already been lost. it was taken by a former sheriffs deputy employee the instructor for that gun certification. that deputy has moved on to another job. they say they re trying to get in touch with her. the reporters who broke this story with the tulsa world newspaper say this could be cleared up if these records
