Babylon Junior High Parents 'Frustrated' With Slow School Return

BABYLON, NY Parents of junior high school students in Babylon are frustrated with what some say is the lack of a district plan to return to full-time in-person learning. In January, 112 parents of seventh and eighth-grade Babylon Junior High School students signed a letter to the superintendent and board of education asking for more transparency, and a plan to move back to a full schedule.
Pete Wieland and his wife Catherine penned the letter. He tells Patch that parents in the district have been patient but that for almost a year the district has been limiting comments and discussion at board meetings and they don t feel they are receiving adequate information about the school s COVID-19 plans. ....

Rockland Resident Deported At 3AM

SPRING VALLEY, NY A Rockland County resident who had been saved Jan. 18 from illegal deportation to Haiti, where he has never been, was unexpectedly deported there overnight Wednesday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Freshman Rep. Mondaire Jones, who had intervened last month to prevent Rockland County resident Paul Pierrilus from being deported to Haiti, where his parents were born but where he is not a citizen, said he learned about the overnight move in a 3 a.m. phone call.
Suddenly, and in the dead of night, ICE was set to unlawfully deport Rockland County s beloved Paul Pierrilus. And there was nothing we could do to stop it, Jones said in a statement to the news media. ....

Pop-up Vaccine Site To Open In Spring Valley

SPRING VALLEY, NY One of New York State s community-based pop-up vaccination sites is coming online this week at the MLK Center in Spring Valley.
The sites, at churches, community centers, public housing complexes and cultural centers, are expected to vaccinate over 25,000 people throughout the week, with more sites coming online every week.
It s part of the community kit campaign started in January by the state s Vaccine Equity Task Force to serve poor communities where health care is less available. ....

North Carolina DMV Stops Issuing Confederate Flag License Plates

NORTH CAROLINA The Confederate flag will no longer be printed on specialty license plates in North Carolina, the state s Department of Motor Vehicles announced.
The Confederate flag tags, which were issued to members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, were discontinued as of Jan. 1, 2021, and will no longer be issued or renewed, the department said. The tags were offered to SCV members for a $30 personalization fee, in addition to a $10 required plate fee. ....

Sudbury CVS Picked For Coronavirus Vaccine Distribution

SUDBURY, MA Eighteen CVS stores across Massachusetts, including one in Sudbury, will receive shipments of the COVID-19 vaccine as state officials seek to improve a so far difficult inoculation rollout.
CVS said Wednesday that the 18 stores will share about 21,600 doses. The stores getting a share are located in Boston, Braintree, Cambridge, Chelsea, Holyoke, Hudson, Medfield, North Grafton, Palmer, Randolph, Seekonk, Sudbury, Watertown, Weymouth and Worcester.
Appointment-only vaccinations will begin Feb. 11 and bookings will be available as early Feb. 9. People will be encouraged to utilize an online scheduling tool. ....
