Councilman asks police to crack down on cars parked on sidewalks

NEW PHILADELPHIA Councilman John Zucal is asking police to crack down on residents parking their vehicles on sidewalks, saying that it is a safety concern. I m not looking for citizens to get ticketed, he said at Monday s city council meeting. That s not my job to go out there and say, let s be punitive right away. But if we could develop a plan, like a good neighbor plan where our police officers can go by and put a warning, just like the state highway patrol will from time to time do if you re speeding and say hey, slow it down. We re saying, get your car off the sidewalks. If we come by again, then we re going to cite you.

Placards being placed on dangerous buildings in New Philadelphia

NEW PHILADELPHIA The New Philadelphia Fire Department has begun putting placards on vacant structures in the city that are in such poor condition that it would be too dangerous for firefighters to enter to fight a fire. At Monday s city council meeting, Mayor Joel Day displayed one of the red and white placards that are being placed on dilapidated structures in New Philadelphia. Fire Chief Jim Parrish and Fire Inspector Jim Sholtz assess a building s condition to determine if the warning sign is necessary, the mayor said. If such a building should catch fire, only defensive measures will be taken to keep the blaze from spreading.
