(KFVS) - Historic buildings in the Heartland have a lot of stories attached to them.
Sometimes those stories are lost if the buildings aren’t maintained.
Downtown Cape Girardeau is home to many historic buildings. Some still stand, but others are just a memory.
“Each one tells its own story about a certain time in the city’s history and so once a building is lost, that story is lost as well,” said Cape Girardeau’s City Planner Ryan Shrimplin. ....

Insurance company files lawsuit against BBQ Masters restaurant owner over settlement monies

STOCKBRIDGE â A civil lawsuit has been filed against BBQ Masters restaurant owner Arick Whitson by Atlantic Speciality Insurance Company in an attempt recoup a $1 million overpayment by the company.
Whitson recently settled a lawsuit with the city of Stockbridge for $1.7 million. The agreement stated the insurance company, ASIC, would wire $1 million to Whitsonâs bank account, $191,193 to Whitson and the restaurant, and the remaining $533,807 to his attorney, Greg Hecht of Hecht Walker P.C.
The lawsuit claims the insurance company inadvertently double paid Whitson, wiring his bank a total of $2 million in two separate transfers; one on April 6, followed by a second on April 8. The April 8 payment was made by Atlantic believing the April 6 transfer had been canceled. ....

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - It’s a warning we bring you every year- if you are using a space heater during this frigid weather, fire officials want you to be especially cautious.
“It’s possible it could cause a fire itself,” said Grag Hecht.
Greg Hecht is the Fire Marshall for the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
He is concerned about the electrical current that can come through a space heater.
“If the wiring becomes over heated, that’s where we run into a possibility of a fire,” said Hecht. ....
