Food giveaway held in honor of Carrie Mae Hambrick

STOCKBRIDGE — The Community Development for Real People and Feeding God’s People Food Pantry hosted a grocery giveaway in honor of Carrie Mae Hambrick in Stockbridge Saturday. The event was held at the historic Green Front Cafe which Hambrick owned for more than 60 years. The cafe, founded in the 1940s, was not only one of the first in Henry County, but also the first restaurant owned and operated by a Black woman. More than 700 food boxes were distributed to residents during Saturday’s event. Personal hygiene items, toiletries and feminine products were also distributed. Elton Alexander, president of CD4RP and city council member, called the giveaway a blessing, adding it was an “amazing day of giving and togetherness in Stockbridge.”

Insurance company files lawsuit against BBQ Masters restaurant owner over settlement monies

STOCKBRIDGE — A civil lawsuit has been filed against BBQ Masters restaurant owner Arick Whitson by Atlantic Speciality Insurance Company in an attempt recoup a $1 million overpayment by the company. Whitson recently settled a lawsuit with the city of Stockbridge for $1.7 million. The agreement stated the insurance company, ASIC, would wire $1 million to Whitson’s bank account, $191,193 to Whitson and the restaurant, and the remaining $533,807 to his attorney, Greg Hecht of Hecht Walker P.C. The lawsuit claims the insurance company inadvertently double paid Whitson, wiring his bank a total of $2 million in two separate transfers; one on April 6, followed by a second on April 8. The April 8 payment was made by Atlantic believing the April 6 transfer had been canceled.

Stockbridge approves aquatic center intergovernmental agreement

Council approved the measure during the April 27 meeting. The $22 million county Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax project is set to be built at the Bridges at Jodeco development site inside city limits. The agreement will put the donation of the property, design, location, permitting authority, building inspections, certificate of occupancy, impact fee waivers and all operations of the aquatic center in the hands of the county. Additionally the county will be responsible for lighting, parking, landscaping and access roads. City Attorney Jeremy Berry, working with County Attorney Patrick Jaugstetter, said an indemnity clause was added to protect the city.
