During world war i. So it is not perfect as far as, there are some exceptions where someone may not appear in the list, but it is the closest thing we have to a complete list of soldiers who served from South Carolina. And so there are just little entries, and it is alphabetical. It also lists the fellows who were killed or died of disease during the war. Greenville not only had a world war i military baser but during world war ii there was an army air base that was built here. It is just south of town. One thing i found interesting is pearl harbor took place december 2 1941. On december 10 in the newspaper it announced that they were building the Greenville Army air base. That is quick. The army was already looking at building a base, not necessarily an airbase so the bombing of pearl harbor took place, that sort of clear the way. Now imnow im calling it the Greenville Army air base. That was its name and until the 1950s. 1951 they renamed the airbase Donaldson Air force base. And aft
Went on a train from florida to sweetwater texas to avenger field. I went into Flight Training and we had male instructors and then we had Army Air Force check pilots but we were there i was there for seven months learning to fly military aircraft. We started off with a steermans and then my class was first class to go from steermans directly to at6s, which is a 650 horsepower aircraft. We did that for Cross Country flying. Then we went to instruments in bt13s. I was there for seven months and once i finished all the training and passed all the air force flight instructors would give us our check rides. Then i graduated and then my orders sent me to Greenville Army air base in mississippi. It was a basic school for cadets and my job was to test airplanes once they had had serious crackups. They would repair them, but then they had to be flight tested before the cadets could fly them. So my job was as a test pilot. But i went to the air force base in florida and went through a, be b26 t
