And she got sick. I don t know if it was a flu or whatever and was examined by a doctor who discovered. She was a woman and was discharged but the key thing is that they did just discharge her from the military. She got a pension probably the first woman in history to get a pension and in fact when when deborah passed away her husband petitioned the government for a spousal benefits which in fact he got regardlessly. He was dead by the time they granted it to him. But but it s quite a story. She served as robert shirtleff another incredible character is dr. Mary walker. Dr. Mary walker was a surgeon trained in new york. The army s crying for surgeons, you know to come to help and take care of the sick and wounded. During the civil war so she comes and presents. Self but they don t want her. Why do you think because she s a woman she persisted though. In fact, she volunteered her services for some time finally through her persistent. She was they did hire her as a contract surgeon, and

[applause] bring it down to short level. good morning and thank you for coming out to listen to me talk first thing in the morning for some, including myself. something weird about hearing your bioread like that. i ll try to live up to everything that was just intention l said about me. intensely said. i want to start with the brief who here has heard of the story of the so-called mercury 13? oh, look at the number of hands, maybe 15 or 20 or sometimes called the first lady astronaut trainees. i don t no way to print my talk so i ll read this off my phone. if you don t know the story over the mercury 13 i ll explain it later. basically it s the story of everything in 13 women trained for space flight in the 1960s and can do on nasa with the goal of writing the wr
landdeck, speaking about women contributing to the war effort during world war ii. great to see everybody today. appreciate you coming to our space here. today, we re going to talk about american women and world war ii. and this is obviously a huge topic, we can spend an entire semester just on this topic alone. so we re going to try to break it down into three different spaces and we re going to look at a lot of images to kind of fit in with the other things we ve talked about. so we are going to talk about american women in three ways. we re going to talk about women at home. women at work. and women at war. so we re going to kind of organize our ideas this way, and again we re going to look at a lot of the propaganda, we have been talking about propaganda throughout this semester and watching videos and things like that. we will get a chance to talk about, everybody found that video okay? all right. it s a good one on women at work during world war ii. you can find it on
