Great Cumbrian Litter Pick: Army of 800 collect 500 bags of rubbish

An army of 800 volunteer covered a distance of 311km and helped to collect more than 500 bags of rubbish.

saw 75 groups right across Cumbria cover a distance of 311km gathering over 500 bags of rubbish.

The annual event, organised by conservation charity Friends of the Lake District, brought together schools, community groups, organisations and businesses to highlight the problems of littering and the huge amount of voluntary work that goes into keeping the county clean.

Call to join the Great Cumbrian Litter Pick

A call has gone out to the public and community litter pick volunteers to rally for the Great Cumbrian Litter Pick.
The event, on May 21 and 22, is co-ordinated by conservation charity Friends of the Lake District.
A charity spokesman said: “It is an opportunity not only to clear up our county but spread the message ahead of the busy tourist season that everyone who visits should take their litter home with them and leave no trace.”
Last year, 40 litter picks took place across Cumbria. This year, 40 litter picks have been registered already.
