welcome to our viewers in the united states and around the world. happy friday, everybody. i m christine romans. we begin at the far north end of the texas panhandle. tornado on the ground. national weather service confirming a tornado strike in perr perryton texas. the fire chief confirming at least three deaths and damage to at least 200 homes. there were collapsed lungs, head injuries and broken bones. cleanup is already under way. congressman ronny jackson is asking people in the area to help any way they can. want to bring in derek van dam in the cnn weather center. this was just one of seven tornados reported thursday along with nearly 200 storms. are we looking at anything like this for today? up fortunately we have another active day ahead of us. the tornados in texas absolutely devastating to see. let s focus on the more immediate threat, what is happening now. we have severe thunderstorm watches stretching from texas through louisiana and the gulf coast. ....
In california and in michigan. affirmative action was already outlawed for public universities in the 90s and in the early 2000s, actually. so, black enrollment at top schools in those two states plummeted drastically, i think it was about 50%. so, let s talk a bit about the broad, long term consequences of that kind of drastic drop in representation of students of color in these institutions. well, when black, latino, and indigenous students are underrepresented as they are at that top 100 most selective institutions, that also extends into the graduate programs. and then, they become underrepresented in that graduate programs. and whoever is underrepresented in the grad programs are also likely to be underrepresented in professions, like doctors, you know, and lawyers, or even on the supreme court. and so, it sort of filters through, through our society, when black and brown and ....
Plus loans, if you don t have access to grad plus loans, it will force the price of grad programs down because you don t have access to that kind of funding. so they are trying to go at it at that level. they are also trying to make sure that i have the ability to compare one institution to another institution, one college to another college, community college versus a four year private, so that you really understand how much debt you are going to get into. they will increase counseling so you have to acknowledge what you are taking on, whether it is grants, scholarships or debt. in either program, it is great that this is in the headlines because student loan debt is a huge national issue. and it needs to be addressed whether through the supreme court or anyplace in the senate. consumer financial protection bureau says like one in five borrowers have underlying risk factors for not being able to ....
