Govt tightens grip over OTT content, announces self-regulatory body


OTT platforms should self-classify the content into five age based categories - U (Universal), U/A, (people above 7 years), U/A above (13 years), U/A (above 16 years), and A (all the adults), said the government on Thursday while announcing guidelines for these platforms.
Platforms would be required to implement parental locks for content classified as U/A 13+ or higher, and reliable age verification mechanisms for content classified as A, it said.
The publisher of online curated content would also be required to display the classification rating specific to each content or programme together with a content descriptor informing the user about the nature of the content, and advising on viewer description (if applicable) at the beginning of every programme enabling the user to make an informed decision, prior to watching the programme. ....

FB, Google, Twitter must remove content within 36 hours of govt order


The government on Thursday announced new information technology rules to curb the misuse of social media platforms.
It mandated firms to appoint a grievance officer and disclose the first originator of the mischievous information and remove it within 36 hours.
The rules said content depicting nudity or morphed pictures of women needed to be removed within 24 hours.
The rules notified by the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, will affect players such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter, and will include OTT (over the top) platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney, and Hotstar.
The rules make a distinction between social media intermediaries and significant social media intermediaries that have a large number of users. The government will notify the threshold of the user base that will distinguish between the two. ....

Govt to announce social media guidelines for Facebook, Twitter and others


The government is today expected to announce the social media and intermediary guidelines, which will be applicable to firms like Facebook, Google, Twitter and others.
According to a document shared by the Internet Freedom Foundation ahead of the formal announcement, the rules are going to be called “Information Technology (guidelines for intermediaries and digital media ethics code) rules 2021 .
The rules define an intermediary as including websites, apps and portals of social media networks, media sharing websites, blogs, online discussion forums and other such functionally similar intermediaries .
A social media intermediary has been defined as one which primarily or solely enables online interaction between two or more users and allows them to create, upload, share, disseminate, modify or access information using its services ....
