Viva Glenda! Friends plan scholarship in memory of local educator


DEMING – Another childhood friend of the late Glenda Sanchez has stepped forward to help establish a scholarship fund in her memory.
“Glenda was a playmate of mine through childhood and I have kept in touch with her for 45 years,” said Amy Seltzer of Deming. “Today, I feel the loss.”
Sanchez, a longtime educator in Luna County, died of COVID-19 complications in November of last year. Her husband soon followed.
Seltzer noted that this week would have marked the 21st annual Cabalgata Binacional; the freedom ride toward goodwill between two nations in Columbus, NM. Sanchez, grew up in Columbus and helped organize the freedom ride that is celebrated annually with the crossing of Mexican riders on horseback at the United States-Mexico Border and American riders who join them in Columbus. The event featured a parade, fiesta, vendors and educational programs at neighboring Pancho Villa State Park. ....

Feeding the masses: Charter high school organizes food distribution


DEMING – Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School has built a strong student body and faculty with the Hispanic catchphrase “Si Se Puede” (“Yes You Can”). The catchphrase applies to the community service DCCCHS has provided during these uncertain times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The DCCCHS community began providing a food pantry for families of its students over the past four years and took that a step further by partnering with Deming High School to help feed their families two years ago.
Thanks to the recognition and support of the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico, distribution of generous food boxes has now been extended to families throughout Luna County orchestrated by DCCCHS Testing Coordinator Angie Martinez, faculty and staff. ....
