He spent much of his career at Vanderbilt University in tennessee, where he developed a strong interest in the civil war. In 2004, he became the professor of history at the university of South Carolina. He enjoyed numerous years of overseas teaching and research experiences. He was a fulbright professor of American History three times, in rome, genoa, and rio de janeiro. He taught one year at the university of leeds in england.
