Pandemics are no longer just something today’s students learn about in history or science class.
The COVID-19 public health crisis has upended normalcy around the world and thrown a monkey wrench into the routines and plans of high school students. Winners of Superintendent’s Awards typically have the recognition commemorated with a banquet dinner, but large gatherings are a no-no until the novel coronavirus is under control. Instead, the seniors selected for 2020 received their certificates from the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents in different, less ceremonial settings.

BOSTON (AP) – Gov. Charlie Baker says Massachusetts is ramping up its vaccination efforts and is hoping to administer up to a million vaccines a month by the spring. In the meantime, Baker urged residents on Wednesday to be patient. There are 125 sites up and running. By the middle of the month, the number should increase to about 165. Also, Tripadvisor has opened its currently unoccupied headquarters in Needham as a COVID-19 vaccination site. The number of newly confirmed coronavirus deaths in Massachusetts rose by 53 on Wednesday, pushing the state’s confirmed COVID-19 death toll to 14,415 since the pandemic’s start.

TURNERS FALLS The spring gala fundraiser put on by the Gill-Montague Education Fund has been canceled for 2021, after the musical performer that had been booked for the event died unexpectedly.
The musician was Philip Bauer, whose Johnny Cash tribute show was known world-wide. Johnny Cash’s drummer, W.S. Holland, called Bauer “the best I have ever seen.” He died of colon cancer in November.
Bauer had originally been booked for the Gill-Montague Education Fund’s 2020 spring gala in April, but was rescheduled to spring 2021 after the outbreak of COVID-19.
