PML-N ahead in Khushab by-election

Top Story May 6, 2021 KHUSHAB: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after polling ended in the PP-84 Khushab constituency of Punjab, according to unofficial and unconfirmed count of votes. As this story went to print, the counting of votes was under way in the Khushab city of Punjab’s Sargodha district after polling ended largely peacefully at 5pm. Geo News reports suggest the voter turnout at the 229 polling stations was satisfactory. PML-N’s Moazzam Sher Kallo was ahead with 7,061, while PTI’s Sardar Ali Hussain Baloch trailed with 4,712 votes. The seat fell vacant after the death of PML-N Member of Punjab Assembly Malik Waris Kallu, who died on March 12, from Covid-19.

Unofficial results showed PTI’s Ali Hussain coming in second place with 62,903 votes. Independent candidate Amjad Raza came in third with 8,340 votes, followed by the candidate from the recently banned Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), Hafiz Muhammad Asghar Ali, who secured 5,782 votes. PPP’s Ghulam Habib Ahmed came in seventh with 235 votes. The seat which covers tehsil Noorpur Thal and some villages of tehsil Quaidabad, had fallen vacant due to the death of PML-N’s Waris Kallu who won it four times consecutively. The party gave the ticket to his son, Moazzam.

The seat fell vacant due to the death of PML-N lawmaker Mohammad Waris Kallo, who had won the elections in 2018 with 66,775 votes. According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the total number of registered voters in the constituency are 292,687. There are 155,104 male and 137,583 female voters. A total of 229 polling stations have been set-up in the constituency (27 for male, 26 for female and 176 joint). About 43 polling stations had been declared sensitive whereas about 14 polling stations have been declared highly sensitive with respect to security concerns and 172 normal.

The seat was left vacant after the death of PML-N MPA Malik Muhammad Waris Kallu, who died on March 12 from COVID-19. The government by way of preparations, formed 10 teams that will monitor the electoral process all the way to the announcement of the results. The PML-N, PTI and PPP are among the parties contesting the poll.
