Sadness as last Catholic service held in Lyttelton, after more than 150 years

Catholic services are finishing in Lyttelton, ending a 150-year tradition dating back to the early whalers and Irish immigrants who came to New Zealand.
Dwindling numbers, a priest shortage, and a plan to merge parishes have led to the “end of an era” when the last Catholic service is held in Lyttelton. LEE KENNY reports.
It will be with a sense of sadness that Father Peter Costello delivers his sermon on Sunday.
It will be the last Catholic mass held in Lyttelton, ending a tradition in the Canterbury port town dating back more than 150 years.
About 200 parishioners, past and present, will attend a special gathering at the site of St Joseph the Worker Church, which was destroyed by the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. ....

A LOCAL photographer has spoken of the “amazement” of capturing the moment the International Space Station (ISS) flew over the Dumbarton night sky.
Gerry Doherty took to his back garden in Dumbarton to capture the magnificent sight of the ISS - the largest single structure humans have ever put into space, manned year-round by citizens of different countries - as it barrelled past the area through the stars on the night of Saturday, January 30.

Three travellers from two rival gangs are jailed for more than 30 years

Members of two warring gypsy gangs have been jailed for more than 30 years after they clashed in a terrifying machete brawl in the street.
The Doherty and Brent Parker families traded blows in the street during a planned fight in the village of Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Warwickshire, while armed with pick-axe handles, machetes and other weapons.
A court heard that the attack, which was the culmination of an escalating feud between the rival traveller families, left one victim with his throat slashed.
A paramedic later said that if the wound had been a couple of millimetres either side or deeper, it would have been a fatal. ....

A former ABA boxing champion is among three men jailed for their parts in a terrifying attack on two brothers during an escalating feud between rival families in the traveller community.
One of the victims of the savage attack could have died after his neck was slashed, missing his carotid artery by just a couple of millimetres, a judge at Warwick Crown Court was told.
John Kiely, amateur boxer Gerry McDonagh and Michael Mongan were charged with attempted murder, which they denied, but pleaded guilty to an alternative offence of wounding with intent. ....
