Fire Watch: The Santa Colonel & the Volunteers Behind NORAD's Hunt for St. Nick

When the red telephone began to ring, Col. Harry Shoup feared the worst. It was 1955, at the height of the Cold War, and Shoup was in the operations center of the Continental Air Defense Command in Colorado. CONAD, as it was known then, stood as the early warning system for a Soviet attack. So the ringing of the red telephone never meant anything good. ....

A conversation with retired Gen. Gene Renuart

On Sept. 11, 2001, Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart was one of the chief war planners at the U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida. Working under Gen. Tommy Franks, Renuart helped design the plan that toppled the Taliban from power in Afghanistan in a matter of weeks. As an Air Force pilot, he flew F-16s and A-10s in more than 60 combat missions and capped his 39-year career as the four-star commander of NORAD and U.S. Northern Command. He was described by Bob Woodward in his 2005 book Plan of Attack as a “balding, brainy fighter pilot with a master s degree in psychology." The Washington Examiner’s Jamie McIntyre spoke with Renuart as the United States departed Afghanistan and America marked the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Retired Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart’s March 29 commentary, “Why Space Command should stay in Colorado,” does a disservice to Huntsville, Ala.
I feel for Renuart’s disappointment in the decision to make Huntsville, Alabama, the permanent home for US SPACECOM. One can tell by reading his commentary that he has a deep appreciation for and bias toward Peterson Air Force Air Force Base and the Colorado Springs area. However, I can’t help but read in his words and lack of positive items about Huntsville a deep bias against a logical and proactive U.S. Air Force leadership decision to make Huntsville SPACECOM’s permanent home. ....
