The Teen Initiative Community Convening on Racial Justice, sponsored by S.F.-based Jewish LearningWorks, took place on April 21 and included the presentation of awards to three Bay Area Jewish youth professionals.
Devra Aarons received the  2020 Award for Excellence in Jewish Youth Education and Engagement,
Rick Concoff received the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award in Jewish Youth Education and Engagement, and
Zephira Derblich-Milea, youth program manager at Shalom Bayit, was awarded the 2021 Award for Excellence in Jewish Youth Education and Engagement.
Analucia Lopezrevoredo, founder and executive director of Jewtina y Co. and the Shamash project director at Bend the Arc, spoke to attendees about “getting started along the long road to racial equity.” ....

Jews responding to surge in attacks on Asian Americans – The Forward


Last June, a San Mateo City Council member of Asian and Jewish heritage had a rock thrown through her window at home. The incident, which is still under investigation by police, came after the coronavirus pandemic sparked a slew of anti-Asian signs and slogans, some reading “F China,” “Chinese Disease” and “Thanks China.”
Eight months later, violence and racism directed against the Asian American community in the Bay Area has spread, reaching new levels, particularly involving the elderly. Incidents include a string of attacks in Oakland’s Chinatown, as well as the killing of an 84-year-old Thai immigrant in San Francisco. ....

'I get 3 New Years!': Chinese American Jews celebrate third New Year in six months – The Forward


The red-Starbucks-cup, jingles-in-pharmacies, wrapping-paper-raffle holiday season may have ended on Jan. 1, but for the more than five million Americans of Asian descent who celebrate Lunar New Year, the stretch of holidays isn’t quite over. For many, one of the most important holidays of 2021 falls on Friday, Feb. 12 a coincidence some have termed Lunar New Year Shabbat.
Lunar New Year so called because it marks the first new moon of the East Asian traditional lunisolar calendar is traditionally celebrated in China as a 15-day affair, usually beginning with a family feast on New Year’s Eve and ending with the Lantern Festival, which honors deceased ancestors. Although in the U.S., Lunar New Year is often conflated with “Chinese New Year,” the day is also celebrated in other countries – including Singapore and Vietnam. ....
