Pre-poll alliances for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections have been announced and almost sealed. Sharing of the seats among the alliance partners has remained the most challenging part for both ruling and opposition combinations. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be having pre-poll alliance with its coalition partner – Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), its coalition partners in the Bodoland Territorial Region- United Peoples Party, Liberal (UPPL) and Gana Surakha Party (GSP). As the BJP has dumped another coalition partner Bodoland People s Front (BPF) and is also the kingmaker in the UPPL-led BTC, the BJP is going to call the shots as far as 12 seats from Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) are concerned. The BJP may find the seat-sharing talks with the AGP tougher than expected. GUWAHATI: With a target of 100 plus seats together with allies, BJP has restructured the five-year-old rainbow North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) in Assam ahead of the assembly election by snapping old friendship and forging new ties and by merger of a couple of allies. The region’s biggest regional party, Asom Gana Party remains as BJP’s best friend.
BJP came to power in 2016 leading the alliance comprising four regional parties AGP, Bodoland People’s Front, Tiwa Aikya Mancha and Rabha Joutha Sangram Samiti. Another regional party Gana Shakti Party (GSP) extended support to the alliance post polls. The new alliance now is BJP-AGP- United People s Party Liberal-Gana Surakha Party.

The 2021 Assembly elections in Assam are poised to witness an intense battle with the new regional party Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) throwing its hat in the ring. The election of Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the former general secretary of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) as the president of the new party was on expected lines. The AJP, backed by the AASU and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), has also announced plans to unite all regional parties who are not in alliance with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or the opposition Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
