Calgary, Canada – Switzerland retained their world title after defeating RCF in the LGT World Women’s Curling Championship 2021 gold medal game on Sunday (9 May) afternoon in the WinSport Arena at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.
Switzerland skipped by Silvana Tirinzoni, with fourth player, Alina Paetz, second Esther Neuenschwander, lead Melanie Barbezat, and supported by alternate Carole Howald and coach Pierre Charette have now won six of the last nine World Women’s titles.
In the first end, RCF, skipped by Alina Kovaleva with third Julia Portunova, second Galina Arsenkina, lead Ekaterina Kuzmina and supported by alternate Maria Komarova and coach Sergei Belanov were sitting two counters. After a hit-and-roll by Kovaleva, Switzerland’s fourth player, Alina Paetz was forced to play a hit-and-stay for the single point to open the scoring. ....

Defending champions Switzerland and the Russian Curling Federation (RCF) continued their unbeaten runs at the World Women s Curling Championship as organisers extended the suspension of broadcast coverage of the event due to positive COVID-19 cases.
Switzerland and the RCF have both won their first six matches at the WinSport Arena in Calgary.
Silvana Tirinzoni s Swiss rink beat Japan 10-5 before sweeping aside China 9-4 in the evening session.
The RCF, skipped by Alina Kovaleva, edged out Denmark 7-5 in their only match of the day.
We knew that it would be a close one, said RCF second player Galina Arsenkina. ....

The fifth round-robin session of the LGT World Women’s Championship took place on Saturday afternoon. Wins for RCF, Sweden and Switzerland saw them join Scotland – who sat out this session – in a four-way tie with three wins and no losses.
RCF were up against Italy and opened with a single point in the first end. Italy then scored two in the second and stole one more in the third to take a 3-1 lead, but scores of three in both the fourth and sixth ends gave RCF a 7-4 lead. ....
