However, some youths in Niger State have accused the state governor of not showing enough concern for the affected communities. They took to social media platforms to lament what they called the failure of the state government to address incessant killings. The youths described Governor Abubakar Sani Bello as a ‘Ghost Governor’. Some of them compared the governor with his counterparts in Kaduna, Borno and Zamfara and scored him low. The post that generated critical reactions was on the “Nigerlites speak out” Facebook wall by one Farida Bosso and it reads in part: “Bandits are killing people in Niger State communities. In Kaduna State, we saw El-Rufai present in every scene in his state; same with Mutawalle of Zamfara. But in Niger State, we have a ghost.” Media reports indicate that the governor did not visit to condole and sympathise with those affected by the attacks. ....

Twenty one persons have been killed and another 40 kidnapped in a renewed bandit attack on Shiroro communities in Niger State.
The attack occurred on Tuesday when about 300 gunmen on motorcycles stormed four villages of Kurege, Sabon gida, Sararai and Rafin Kanya, killing some people and abducted many others.
An eyewitness, who is also an indigene of the Shiroro Local Government Area, Galadima Salisu, said on the telephone that unless governments at all levels come to their aid, the area could be taken over by bandits.
All efforts to contact the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Wasiu Abiodun, failed. ....

Bandits kill 31 in Nigeria despite military crackdown

Despite the Nigerian military’s efforts to end banditry, at least 31 people have been killed this week in different locations in the country including Niger, Kaduna and Zamfara states.
The latest incident resulted in the killing of 21 people in the Shiroro local government area of Niger state on January 2, 2021. About 40 other people were reported abducted.
Reports say that more than 300 bandits riding motorcycles and carrying sophisticated weapons invaded Kurebe, Sabon-gida, Sarari and Rafin Kanya in Niger state.
“They moved from community to community shooting sporadically,” an eyewitness said.
‘A massacre’

A member of staff of the Shiroro local government council, Mr Galadima Salisu, described the incident as “a massacre”. ....

Gunmen in the early hours of Tuesday, invaded Shiroro communities in Niger State, killing twenty-one persons and kidnapping forty others.
It was gathered that the gunmen numbering about three hundred gunmen stormed Kurege, Sabon Gida, Sararai and Rafin Kanya on motorcycles, shooting sporadically.
Confirming the development, an eye witness who is also an indigene of Shiroro Local Government, Galadima Salisu told newsmen in a telephone interview that except government at all levels come to their aid, he is afraid that the area could be taken over by bandits who operate at will.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Niger State Command, ASP Wasiu Abiodun, is yet to confirm the development as all effort to reach out to him proved abortive. ....
