at the ravenswood avenue crossing. this is just off el camino real in a congested part of town. barry mcsweeney is live with the latest. what have we learned? reporter: we just saw a train going by here. they are working to repair the damage here in menlo park. i m told the traffic often backs up from just a block away from this direction, and if you re not careful you can find your car sitting on a caltrain track, and maybe a train coming at you as it did today going 80 miles an hour. this pile of metal used to be an acura suv. the impact from the train so strong, the vehicle s engine was knocked clear and hauled away by a different tow truck. it s a tragedy. reporter: caltrain believes about 4:00 today, the woman driving the acura started across the ravenswood crossing but traffic prevented her getting her vehicle off the tracks. it s just a basic fundamental rule. don t stop on the tracks. don t start across the tracks until you re sure you can get all the way ac
the tracks. don t start on the tracks till you re sure you can get all the way across and she just got caught in traffic, apparently wasn t paying real close attention. reporter: the fire department rescued her from the car and rushed her to the hospital where she would later die. the intersection is busy and congested, an accident some say waiting to happen. traffic at this intersection will back way up and then people will try and sneak across and hope they clear the intersection and then in this case the gal was just sitting there. in traffic all the time i see people stop to the tracks all the time and i just wonder why are they doing that? reporter: the crash destroyed one of the guardrails that s supposed to prevent cars from driving onto the tracks when the train is approaching. southbound trains were stopped for several hours during the accident investigation and clean-up stranding countless passengers during their evening commute. caltrain said they will work
