For fuselage cracks on nearly 60,000 flights. mary schiavo now represents clients suing the airline industry. good morning, mary. good morning, carol. just two years ago, they were fined $7.5 million because they did not inspect planes for this very problem. what was up with that? was the fine not big enough? probably not, the fine wasn t big enough. but two things occurred. one, they allowed visual inspections. some of these cracks are very difficult to see and you have to use ultrasonic or sometimes even magnetic resonance. you have to treat to plane as if it s a body and you re looking for problems. so the visual inspections cannot find all these cracks. the second thing that occurred after that, southwest did hire experts to come in and look at the cracking situation, but the experts and boeing said that some cracking was okay. in some cases, up to 6 inches. and they had a procedure where ....

Hole is larger than first reported. the fracture area is five feet by one foot wide. a preliminary onsite inspection reveals preexisting fatigue along the entire fracture surface. reporter: the ntsb is cutting out the fracture surface so it can be more closely examined. they say they see no sign of faulty maintenance. we have no indications that something was actually missed in an inspection, something that could have been detected that wasn t detected. reporter: the plane s flight recorders are in washington. no one was seriously injured when the hole burst open at 36,000 feet friday. the plane lost cabin pressure and made a rapid emergency landing in yuma. records show the 15-year-old boeing 737-300 underwent repairs for at least a dozen fuselage cracks which experts say is routine. this is basically something that comes about with age and utilization. that s what they ll be focused in on. there s absolutely no indication here that this is something fleet-wide. reporter: ....
