by Kevin Zimmermann Frozen ground in the winter is good news for truckers, since frozen roads can bear heavier loads.  And so the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has now expanded Frozen Road designation to all but the extreme southeast corner of the state.  Frost depths of at least 18 inches will allow maximum gross weights up to 98,000 pounds on vehicles with a minimum of five axles.  Those higher limits don’t apply on county or local roads unless so designated, or on highways or bridges posted for lower weight limits. The Frozen Road law makes it easier for delivery of salt and sand used for winter maintenance, and also aids the logging industry.  Truckers should check the DOT’s “Motor carrier/trucker” website for complete information on weight restrictions before they head out with the heavier loads.
