(MURFREESBORO) Music has always been a vital and meaningful part of the Battle at Stones River. There was an eery feeling as the sun began to set on December 30, 1862. Some 83,000 opposing troops were so close they could hear and see other, many had no clue what the war was all about, and sadly many of these young men were from the same families but on different sides.

(MURFREESBORO) Honoring soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice took place at 1:30 Sunday afternoon (5/29/222) at the rostrum in the Stones River Battleground Cemetery. Retired U.S. Army Colonel Jeffrey Gaylord was the keynote speaker, and shared moving memories of presenting four flags to families of fallen soldiers during his 30-years of service.
The 9th Kentucky Infantry fired a 21-gun salute while a wreath was placed to honor the fallen heroes.

(Murfreesboro, TN) Former State Representative Mike J. Liles of Murfreesboro has died. The 76-year-old served as a Republican in the 97th and 98th Tennessee General Assemblies.Liles, most recently the president of The Friends of the Stones River National Battlefield, helped to ensure land that was once owned by General Electric (2150 Northwest Broad Street) and later purchased by O’Reilly’s Auto Parts, would be preserved and eventually become part of the Stones River Battlefield.
