The most fervent supporters of former President Donald Trump fell short Tuesday in their underdog bids for the GOP gubernatorial nomination in New Jersey, but left with some bragging rights after collecting a sizable share of the vote.
Former State Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli proved to be a better fit for the deep-blue state after navigating a tricky four-way primary battle in which he was branded a “Never Trumper” and his rivals touted their devotion to the former president.
Bolstered by a massive fundraising advantage and broad support from the state’s GOP establishment, Mr. Ciattarelli was declared the winner by the New York Times and other news outlets about two hours after the polls closed at 8 p.m.

Murphy’s re-election campaign on Tuesday launched a nearly $5 million media blitz that includes both television and digital ads as he vies for a second term this year.
The ads will run in the New York and Philadelphia network and cable media markets through June 7 just before New Jersey’s June 8 primary elections, even though Murphy does not have a primary challenger for the Democratic nomination.
In his first TV ad, Murphy shown wearing a mask says new Jersey was “tested” unlike any other state by the coronavirus pandemic but “came together.” The Democrat then rolls off some first-term accomplishments, including hiking the state’s minimum wage.

It’s off to the races for this year’s Democratic and Republican primaries in New Jersey.
Candidates had to meet a Monday deadline to file petitions to run in the state’s June 8 primary elections. Now the fields are all set in a big election year with the governor’s office and all 120 seats in the state Legislature on the ballot, as well as numerous local races.
The primaries determine who wins the Democratic and Republican nominations to run in the Nov. 3 general election.
