Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill. Manar resigned his state senate seat to take a senior advisor’s post with Gov. J.B. Pritzker. The 48th Legislative District asked for applications to succeed Manar and, on Tuesday, announced eight finalists. They include Roberta Vojas, a Macoupin County Board member, and Chase Wilhelm who lost a Nov. 3 bid to unseat state Rep. Avery Bourne, R-Morrissonville. Other candidates include Springfield Park Board Member Lisa Badger, retired Illinois State Police Shad Edwards, Springfield Alderwoman Doris Turner, former Springfield alderman Frank McNeil, Ruth Walker of the Macon County State’s Attorney’s office and Decatur Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe. ....

But discussions over who might fill Manar’s seat have been ongoing in political circles ever since the announcement of the three-term senator’s early departure for a senior role in Gov. JB Pritzker’s administration two weeks ago. Possible candidates that have emerged include Springfield Ward 3 Ald. Doris Turner, who is also the Sangamon County Democratic Party chair; Springfield Park District board member Lisa Badger; former Springfield Ward 2 Ald. Frank McNeil; Chase Wilhelm, an Army reservist who ran unsuccessfully against state Rep. Avery Bourne, R-Morrisonville, in 2020; Decatur Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe; and Macoupin County board member Roberta Vojas. ....

The seat was vacated earlier this month by Democrat Andy Manar who resigned to take a position as a senior advisor in Governor J.B. Pritzker’s Administration. The 48th Legislative District Committee said it will be accepting applications for those interested in being appointed to complete the current term, which has two years remaining. The 48 th District covers portions of Macon, Christian, Montgomery, Macoupin, Madison, and Sangamon counties. People who wish to be considered should send in a resume or biography, a detailed statement explaining their involvement with the Democratic Party, another detailed statement about their electability and vision for the district, and a headshot. Applications should be emailed to [email protected] by 5 p.m. on Monday, January 25 ....
