To the Editor: A child of the Depression, I cut my political teeth on the New Deal. When I got old enough, my dad, a Teddy Roosevelt Republican who voted for Franklin D. Roosevelt, had me listen to F.D.R. on the radio and pay attention to news reels at the movies. F.D.R.’s critics responded to the New Deal the way today’s Republicans do, whining about deficits, calling the Works Progress Administration, the Civilian Conservation Corps and Social Security socialist and crying for a stop to doing much for the people. Where would seniors today be without Social Security? ....
Newly minted State Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) will continue serving as Springfield alderwoman for the next two weeks as the city council prepares to vote on a city budget later this month. Turner, who was appointed and sworn in to represent the state’s 48th Senate district on Saturday, sent her letter of resignation from the Springfield City Council late Tuesday. She said she was waiting for guidance from a senate attorney to confirm she can hold both posts at once. The Illinois Constitution prohibits members of the General Assembly from getting paid as a public officer or employee, such as city council member or firefighter, while they are “in attendance as a member of the General Assembly.” ....

Doris Turner In a unanimous vote on Saturday, Feb. 6, Doris Turner of Springfield was chosen by Democratic Party officials to represent state Senate District 48, which includes all or parts of Springfield, Decatur, Taylorville and Litchfield. The seat was vacated by Andy Manar earlier this year. State Sen. Doris Turner is a lifelong resident of the capital city. Her parents were both from Texas. Her mother was a beautician and her father worked for a factory that manufactured heavy construction equipment. We have always been a very strong union family, and I continue to always have those union ties throughout my entire political career, Turner told ....
