Brazil s federal government on Tuesday nationally suspended the vaccination of pregnant women with the AstraZeneca Covid-19 shot, after an expectant mother in Rio de Janeiro died from a stroke possibly related to the inoculation.
Franciele Francinato, coordinator of the Health Ministry s vaccination programme, told reporters the suspension was enacted as a precautionary measure after health regulator Anvisa issued a warning about the vaccine s use in pregnant women earlier in the day.
Authorities are investigating the incident. The suspension applies only to AstraZeneca s shot and not to vaccines developed by Sinovac and Pfizer Inc that are also being used in the country. ....

Brazil suspends AstraZeneca vaccine for pregnant women
Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian states on Tuesday suspended immunization of pregnant women with the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine on the advice of the national health regulator after a reported death.
The suspension was to remain in place until the health ministry establishes the cause of death of a woman in Rio de Janeiro who received the vaccine, Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga told a news conference.

Brazil s Health Ministry Tuesday announced that vaccination of pregnant women and mothers in Brazil against Covid-19 will be restricted only to patients with comorbidities (pre-existing diseases) and they would only be given CoronaVac or Pfizer vaccines, following a death which might be linked to the AstraZeneca immunizer.
For that reason, authorities have advised pregnant women who have already received the AstraZeneca medication to seek proper follow-up, after the National Health Surveillance Agency s (Anvisa) recommendation pending a probe into the rare death on May 10 of a 35-year-old pregnant woman due to a hemorrhagic stroke that may be linked to the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine. ....
