Welcome back to the weekend, folks. Were here, and House Speaker mike johnson is proving he is actually really good at one thing. Kicking that can down the road. Congress now has another week to avoid a partial government shutdown. But none of this is normal, and we cannot say that enough. If congress was actually functioning like it should, this would have been a done deal back in september. So, joining us have to discuss this and all other things happening with the governments Transportation Secretary pete buttigieg. Secretary buttigieg, welcome to the program. You are still in washington, d. C. Your colleagues on capitol hill, most of them, have gone home. Theres a chance that were gonna be here this weekend, figuring out if they can continue to fund the government. They kick the can down the road. They bought themselves about a week. Can you just give us a sense form your Vantage Point of what is at stake with the government operating in this way, with Congressional Republicans con
Hello, everyone. Good morning. It is saturday, september 30th. Im amara walker. And im omar jimenez. Youre in the cnn newsroom. The government is barrelling towards a shutdown with no solution in sight. Today is the last day for congress to pass a funding bill to keep the government open. You see the count down. Now the clock is ticking. Right now House Republicans are in a closed door meeting to try and come up with a last minute solution. But just last night House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy once again failed to pass a Stop Gap Bill in his chamber and now he is warning that the senate bill wont pass either, calling their bipartisan bill Dead On Arrival. But Senate Minority leader Mitch Mcconnell says there is only one path forward. The choice facing congress is pretty straightforward. We can take the Standard Approach and fund the government for six weeks at the current rate of operations, or we can shut the government down in exchange for zero meaningful progress on policy. Our team is o
Cuts to spending. They dont want to spend a dime on ukraine, they want to spend it on the work, instead. If there was a shutdown, while all this plays out, its a reminder of real life consequences, your flights would be delayed, thousands of Airport Workers are without pay. Border agents wont get paid either. The United States is left vulnerable. If pentagon workers are furloughed, Small Businesses will get new loans. Food inspections wont happen. Museums, national parks, forests will close, Student Loans will be disrupted, and so will the money for school districts. Kids who had access to programs disrupted, it all happened at links. Issues from the environment to cancer will be paused. We will speak to someone who is in the commit overrun capital hill. Congressman, thank you for being here. We are 24 hours away from the shutdown. What is the path out of this to avoid a shutdown . What are you hearing from leadership about what we might see in the next 24 hours . Let me comment on som
In his car. There was so much rain a sea lion at the Central Park Zoo managed to escape her pool when it flooded. The zoo says that she roamed around for a bit but she was eventually returned safely to her exhibit tonight. Thank you for joining me on this friday night. Cnn primetime with abby phillip starts right now. This is americas debt. More than 33 trillion. And the first time that clock has reached that grim milestone. That is more than a quarter Million Dollars per taxpayer. Tax cuts, stimulus programs, defense spending, pandemic unemployment, all of them to blame. And any fair person would agree that that is unsustainable. So the republican mission to lower that number makes some sense. The problem is their method of drawing attention to it is about to shut the American Economy down. The government down. And negatively impact americans who dont have the time or frankly the money for the poison of todays politics. Good evening. Im abby phillip. And in just 24 hours the clock wil
The republicans, who hold a slim majority in the house of representatives, are at a deadlock, with members on the right of the party demanding wide ranging spending cuts. One of that groups main objections has been the white houses request for an additional 24 billion in aid to ukraine. Tonight, mr mccarthy urged the senate to drop that measure from its resolution. I think if we had a clean one without ukraine on it, we could probably be able to move that through. I think if the senate puts ukraine on there and focuses ukraine over america, i think that could cause real problems. Megan scully is Bloomberg Congress editor and she joined me in the last hour. What is your initial reaction to this news from Speaker Mccarthy . That if ukraine was removed, a deal might be on the table. This is one of many ideas that are percolating this evening. The closer we get to the deadline, the more ideas seem to be giving birth by both sides. This latest offer, not even quite an offer proposal, someth
