0 pressure to force a shutdown. we re joined by two political strategists, republican john brabender and democrat bob shrum. let me begin with you, john. should we take the threat seriously? or is this being used simply for fund raising purposes? i ve got to believe for someone like ted cruz every time he talks about defunding government, there s a spike in his donations. well, i think you re 100% right. there are republican who s just want to burn everything down to stop it if that s what it takes. but i believe you have to separate politics from policy in this case. i do not believe there will be a shutdown. it s too risky for the 2014 elections. you re right. you can send an e-mail fund raiser and get people to sign petitions. it s great to get the base engaged and it keeps the issue alive. i think it s more about that than ultimately shutting down the government. what is the end game? how do these individuals calling for the shutdown extricate themselves from that at the right
the senate is working on the 20 14th federal budget. ma.y are having a voterabm they could be there all night and into the early hours of tomorrow morning. joining us on the phone, kathleen hunter. she reports for bloomberg news. they have been taking a slew of amendment votes. what is going on? this is a voterama. it has been four years since he had one of these on the senate floor. the senate has not done a budget in four years. they take several hours. sometimes 12, routine hours. two-minute debates. .hen the next amendment two-minute debate. five-minute vote. proposal after proposal. how long will it take to get to a final vote? there are 400 amendments that had been filed. they need to be prefiled. realistically, only a fraction of those will get a vote. i think we are at 20 amendments now. the last time we did a budget in 2009, there were 38 of them. earlier today someone told me the most they have ever done was 44 in 2008. it looks like we could be getting clos
i.d. but not a student i.d., you know this thing is being designed with partisan implications. our job is to make sure that we put some light on it. hopefully we will be able to pass legislation to prevent this from going on. hopefully some people will be embarrassed because there seems have been exposed. let me ask, you have done the order registration in the past and you re doing them under these laws. how many fewer people do you think your drives will be able to register as a result of the schemes? is it on? at this point, i could not give you a solid number but i can say that we had a high school project we have been proud of over the last election. one of the problems we were encountering in registering high school students was the problem of these kids not having photo id in the states in which was required. i will also mention in the past, it would be registered. that is right. now with all this paperwork the only person in this room that has had to pres
country. there is a distinct section of the populist in our country that views education as a privilege and not a right. there is an element where you roland was referring to the two-parent household, and that s not dealing in reality on the ground. it s something we hope for, but it s not something that you can legislation. what you can do is fund afternoon and preschool programs. but it s not about just legislation. now, you said it has to be, though. no, it s not. it has to be, because that s what we can control. we collectively could do something about it. give you perfect example. a few years ago i was on a program and we were talking about reverend floyd flake, and jonathan causal. if you want to read anything about education in this country yeah n. this country. it s about funding and
2.2 million jobs through the first three months of year. but ben bernanke stressed it will take a long time to recoup job losses. so the question is, does this recovery have legs? we will pose that question to wall street journal columnist, john fund, and steve lee, and joanne. i will put my bias out there. i am a confident guy, and i think the economy is going to recover. i think that s where we are headed. i am also a journalists, as a couple of you are, and we have to turn that stone over and say there are mixed messages out there, so where are we headed. what can we tell our viewers about where we are in the recovery. john, let me start with you? there are positive signs. this recession is two years old. it eventually does have to end. most of your viewers are concerned about jobs, jobs they lost or jobs they are worried about losing. the recession costs us 8.4 million jobs. we are 11 million jobs in the hole. last month we had job growth. 162,000 jobs. but 40,000 of th
