Teton goats down to 29

Aggressive efforts to hunt the Teton Rangeâs nonnative mountain goat population out of existence are having the desired effect: As few as 29 animals remain.
That count of the sure-footed, white-coated animals was the result of a two-day Wyoming Game and Fish Department aerial Teton Range survey that also found 90 native bighorn sheep, the species thatâs supposed to benefit from the goat eradication effort.
âI was happy we counted 90 sheep,â Game and Fish Jackson Region wildlife biologist Aly Courtemanch said. âThat shows that the herd is hanging on, but I still have concerns about that bighorn sheep population.â
All of the 29 exotic goats Courtemanch found were in Grand Teton National Park, and there were just four kids she was able to tally. The count suggests that the population of the exotic goats is definitely on the downswing, which is expected following two straight years of intensive hunting and volunteer culling both inside and out ....

Gros Ventre grouse augmentation 'premature,' state says | Environmental

Wyoming wildlife officials have set aside money to send helicopters to search for a sage grouse flock thatâs suspected to dwell somewhere up the Gros Ventre River basin.
A year ago, there was a credible report of 18 sage grouse seen flying in the Cottonwood Creek area. If theyâre found again and verified, the flock would be a difference-maker for the Gros Ventreâs grouse, which were last officially surveyed with just two males remaining. The tanking official grouse tally was grounds for a proposal to augment the population by bringing in birds from the Green River basin. Transmitter backpacks were even purchased to track the translocated birdsâ success, but then this month the Wyoming Game and Fish Department decided it would not act on that idea. ....
