A vaccine that comes at possibly the darkest period yet in the coronavirus pandemic is bringing new hope and the prospect of a break for area and state hospitals under siege by a crush of critical coronavirus patients.

By week’s end, as the county’s death toll had hit 561 and California recorded more than 41,000 new cases and 300 deaths in a single day Friday, health care workers were continuing to receive the new Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. COVID vaccine, spike in homicides top Week in Review as virus continues to rage


By week’s end, as the county’s death toll had hit 561 and California recorded more than 41,000 new cases and 300 deaths in a single day Friday, health care workers were continuing to receive the new Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The rollout will continue over the coming days, weeks and months in phases, with the highest risk first in line. By phase 4, everyone in the U.S. should have a chance for the shot.
“Hope is springing up everywhere,” Dr. Scott Neeley, vice president and chief medical officer at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, said in a virtual community update Friday. “We can see the light at the end of the tunnel with respect to this pandemic, but we have to stay safe together.” ....

Community update includes sobering numbers as COVID-19 cases surge ahead of holidays


This week, the first round of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, some 4,875 doses, was distributed by San Joaquin County Public Health to the county’s seven hospitals, who inoculated their health care workers. Some 1,950 doses went to St. Joseph’s, which has a deep freezer. Pfizer’s vaccine and the Moderna vaccine, which soon is expected to be approved by the Food & Drug Administration, are RNA vaccines, a technique that never has been used before in a human vaccine but is extraordinary and appears to be a highly effective technique, Neeley said.
Neeley explained the RNA vaccine mimics the virus’ mechanism of action but does it in an extraordinarily safe way, “because you’re not producing a live virus,” he said. ....

San Joaquin General, Kaiser Manteca and Doctors Hospital receive vaccine

The first round of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine continues to roll out in San Joaquin County.
On Wednesday, the vaccine was administered to eligible members of the staff at Doctors Hospital of Manteca in accordance with Food & Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, state and local guidelines.
On Thursday, vaccines were administered to staff at San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp and Kaiser Permanente in Manteca.
Sandra Heinze was Kaiser Permanente s first employee to receive the vaccine in the Central Valley, according to a company spokesperson. As staff watched, Heinze, a registered ICU nurse at Kaiser Permanente in Manteca, said it didn t hurt a bit and that she didn t hesitate to take the shot. ....

California sets teachers, first responders, grocery, restaurant workers for next vaccines


They’re divvying up the next round of about 8 million doses expected early next year, and settled on three broad sectors in no particular order:
• 1.4 million education and child care providers, a category that includes preschools, K-12, and higher education including trade schools.
• 1.1 million emergency services providers, including not only police and firefighters but those who provide child and youth services, shelters, social services for the elderly and those with disabilities, the criminal justice system, and businesses that provide goods used by the safety workers.
• 3.4 million food and agriculture workers, from farm to table including those working in food and drinking establishments as well as farmworkers and grocers, bakers and butchers. Plant nurseries, florists and sawmills all fall into that category, as do community food services and pharmacies. ....
