president biden is about to honor of hero of bloody sunday. it was 58 years ago that white deputies and state troopers violently turned on peaceful demonstrators. they were beginning a 54-mile march to montgomery, the state capital to call for equal voting rights for african-americans. this is obviously an important trip for the president. what can you tell us? reporter: well, jim, president biden s purpose here in selma, alabama today is two-fold. the white house has said he wants to commemorate the day, the events of bloody sunday 58 years ago so that they will not be erased from america s memory. the president will be speaking in just a short while with a backdrop of the edmund pettis bridge right behind him, where african-americans were severely beaten by white officers. the president in his remarks today is once again expected to put the spotlight on the need for vote being rights legislation. in the 2020 campaign, that was one of the central tenets, one of main ....
Beaten by white officers. the president in his remarks today is once again expected to put the spotlight on the need for vote being rights legislation. in the 2020 campaign, that was one of the central tenets, one of main promises that president biden made to voters, is that he would try to enact new voting rights protections for americans across the country. so far the legislative action up on capitol hill has simply been stalled. they were unable to pass two pieces of legislation in the democratic-controlled house and senate. that was the john lewis voting rights act and another for the people voting rights bill as well. and now they are facing an even more uphill climb as republicans have control of the house. while the president has advocated and tried to stress the need for voting rights legislation, there have been many activists who have been frustrated with the inability to actually get anything across the finish line up on capitol hill. here in selma, alabama, the president is ....
That senate democrats are trying to get across the finish line up on capitol hill, but they really face an uphill battle. republicans have not signed on board with any of those proposals, but senate majority leader chuck schaumer has said that if republicans will not get on board he is prepared to hold a vote to change the senate filibuster rules. that would be an historic vote to change the rules to only require a simple majority in order to pass voting rights legislation. president biden has signalled he s open to that carveout of the filibuster but it would require all democrats be on board and right now in are some major holdouts, two of them being senators manchin and sinema. you have heard democratic lawmakers like congressman jim clyburn real turning up the heat on manchin saying that he should a vote for this bill insisting this is now the time to act and changing those senate filibuster rules. ....
Still ongoing negotiations and that this may take the better part of the week as he is hoping that his economic agenda will be able to cross the finish line up on capitol hill. now, earlier today, democrats acknowledged that there may not be a vote tomorrow on that bipartisan infrastructure bill as house speaker nancy pelosi had previously promised. she said she would not be bringing a bill up for a vote if she does not have the votes. you have heard progressives say that they are not ready to sign onto that proposal if there is an agreement on the $3.5 trillion bill, and moderates are still balking at that price tag. so the president certainly and democratic leaders on top of capitol hill, they have a heavy lift ahead over the course of this next week as they are trying to take this domestic agenda of the president s across the finish line. but still it appears there are major divides among the democratic party, between those moderates and progressives, that the president needs all of ....
