shooter. they ran past. went back inside. what were you thinking as you were hiding in that bathroom for so long? i think i was just like, trying to be still. not like, just crying in my head, saying, don t make any noise. in the span of ten days, to 18 year old man allegedly killed 31 people 19 of them children, in two separate mass shootings on opposite ends of the country. the shooters in both massacres, a lot and they won in uvalde, texas uvalde, texas, legally purchased semiautomatic rifles. assault style weapons, they can buy, but they are not legally old enough to buy a call. this is not the american dream, it is the american nightmare. our nation is under siege. we are not even six months into the year and according to the gun violence archive, there have been 217 mass shootings. 24 of them were at schools. the centers for disease control says that guns are now the leading cause of lessons in america. we have endured gut-wrenching mass shootings this mon ....
With domestic terrorists coming into communities across the country to say nothing of police departments et cetera. so the conversation needs to be a lot more aggressive, not just with joe biden and executive orders but it has to be the democratic party on a consistent basis. shaming every single republican who hides behind the nra and also democratic senators who quietly had behind manchin and sinema just so they don t actually have to be on record to be bold and to be aggressive about real control. we ve had amendments the constitution, we could have more. could i say, responded that real quick. when the democratic party shows up then that will happen. but that s not going to happen with just democratic party. they couldn t get out of the way of the filibuster debate. so i don t expect them to get out of the way of something as complicated as gun discussion on guns. they still talk about in terms of control. in the gun control argument is the exact argument you don t want to make. ....
Modest changes, at best, in terms of going to that 60-vote threshold to three fifths of the chamber having to vote for some rules and limiting the ability of the minority to filibuster on a procedural motion. and so kind of allow the debate. will this change the way the senate does business? no, but it is certainly a concession that manchin is making to his fellow democrats to say, we do need to have some changes to the filibuster here. here are some things that i think could actually be done. interesting, senator schumer has promised that there will be a vote on changing the senate rules in the next two weeks. do democrats have a plan to tackle voting rights if efforts fail? right. they are basically scheduling a vote for january 17th at this point. that s what senator schumer has said. that is likely to fail, because no republicans are supportive of democrats efforts here. and so that kind of moves us into this filibuster debate that we were just talking about. ....
Democratic leadership. what i watched with harry is almost every member of the senate understood something about what harry had done for them, caring about their constituency, about their issues that were important. he was quite extraordinary. but as i said, he wasn t someone who was loud. he wasn t a back slapper, hale fellow well-met. he just wasn t. what do you make of this current filibuster debate? i think the filibuster should change. i think we should keep the filibuster. what senator mcconnell did when taking it away for supreme court justices was unforgivable. senator mcconnell decided years ago he was going to filibuster every motion to proceed on virtually every judge, and that of course caused the first change harry made. but mcconnell went much, much further. i think the filibuster should be one in which rather than the 60 votes mattering, if you want to ....
He responded i m insulted you would ask the question. so he fired right back and did not think it was a suitable question, but certainly it was notable that stacey abrams was nowhere to be seen. it is, sandra, stacey abrams is boycotting the democratic president he is so toxic. democrats see the writing on the wall and they know and understand that the filibuster debate, the elections debate, is really a way to get the american attention off of issues at hand as you had mentioned inflation. the cost of food, cost of energy prices. americans are hurting right now. we need people with real solutions and obviously president biden is not providing leadership. sandra: senator, always enjoy talking with you. appreciate it. thank you. john: coming up on america ....
