governor, josh shapiro joins us -- this sunday, just days before the most consequential midterm election in years, the vicious attack on a pelosi's husband are raising fears of political violence. in her first statement since her husband was attacked in their home -- a hammer, attempted to tie him up. and said that they would wait until, quote, nancy got home. to be clear -- they hope it's a final winning message for democrats. joining me now, in an exclusive interview, white house press secretary -- -- something that all of us need to say. it should be done in one voice. sadly, it has become political. we need to end this. this is about the president has said multiple times. he has talked about it in his speeches and other remarks. the thing that is probably most haunting about when we hear of the reports of this assailant, this attacker, that you were speaking of. he was yelling out the things we heard during january six. which is, where is nancy? again, we need to end this type of rhetoric. it needs to stop. it is incredibly, incredibly, dangerous. has the white house reached out to senate minority leader, house minority leader, kevin mccarthy, in an effort to get everyone together and put out a bipartisan condemnation or statement of the political alignment we are in? trying to tamp down the rhetoric? a unified show force against what we are facing? >> even by the president most recently. he believes in reaching out to the other side. that is not anything that is unusual, right? to reach out to the other side. i don't have anything to speak of any speech man and a bipartisan statement. the president himself has been very clear you all talked about the soul of the nation the reason why this president ran for president again in the first place just a couple of years ago, to attack against democracy we still have people out there undermining that, undermining our free and fair elections the president has spoken to that multiple times, multiple speeches. what we saw on january six still exists and still exists again this should not be a partisan issue. how worried is the white house about the potential for more political violence? as we get to the midterms and also on election day. one of the things the president has talked about, he talked about condemning violence political violence toning down the rhetoric how our democracy is currently still under attack. there is also optimism, right? he believes a majority of americans out there who do not want to see that who do not want to see our democracy under attack. if anything, it was one of the reasons why he was so successful in 2020. it is up to us to make sure we continue to protect our democracy. we strengthen our democracy. also by him being out there and so forcefully to that issue, i want to be very careful because i can't speak to elections and i can't speak to politics. what he is out there saying is there is a choice to be made. there is so much at stake. so much at stake! there are differences on what he and congressional democrats are trying to do. we talk about the economy, we talk about what commercial republicans are trying to do. >> let me switch gears here for a moment, president obama was at a rally last night, in milwaukee. he had this to say. ght, they have a long hours and e backs, and bad knees, to get that social security. if ron johnson does not understand that. if he understands giving tax breaks for private planes more than he understands that seniors who worked all their lives are able to retire with dignity and respect, he is not the person who is thinking about you and knows you and sees you! he should not be your senator from wisconsin! >> quite the passionate statement from the former president. my question is, why is the former president making this case and not the current president? >> i would disagree with that characterization of your question. or how it was characterized. the president has been talking about this almost every day for months now. he has been talking about the choices that are at stake here, which is what i was just talking about a moment ago which is, what republicans are trying to do. congressional republicans are trying to take away in the social security. they want to chop it off. they want to put it on the talking block. the president has been saying this. it's why he has taken every action he can to make sure we strengthened medicare, right? that is why the inflation reduction act has been very important, critical, why it will lower cost for americans. the first thing they want to do is repeal the inflation reduction act, as well. it will increase cost for americans when it comes to energy when you think about health care the president has been talking about our economy what are the things that are at stake, right? also the thing the work that president biden, vice president harris, those things they have done to get our country back on its feet over the past 20 months. >> you said the magic word, economy! that is the next question. we got some good news, some good economic news. the gdp growing at a faster pace than most people expected. so there is inflation. there is the fear of looming recession. pull off to poll shows that voters trust republicans more than democrats when it comes to the economy. what is the administration's response to that persistent view among the electors? >> first we have always said we understand what the american public is dealing with. we understand there are high cost. we understand they are feeling very squeezed right now. the president always says this, you hear him say this all the time he wants to make sure we give americans a little bit more breathing room. it's what his dad used to say when he grew up in scranton. dealing with these kitchen table issues. when the president walked into this administration, the economy was in ruins. absolute ruins. unemployment was above 6.4%. hundreds of thousands of jobs, small businesses were shutting down. the majority of schools were shutting down. the previous president he we saw something we hadn't seen before which is he had lost more jobs since president herbert hoover because of this presidents policy's unemployment is at 3.5% and historic low we haven't seen that in 50 years. we have seen 10 million jobs created. he moved even further by making sure we lower those gas prices, right? because of russia and the war that putin has started, we saw gas prices go up. now it is down by $1.25 per gallon since the peak of june. that is because this president took historic actions to make sure that gas prices were coming down we still have more work to do! that is why the inflation reduction act is so important. we still have more work to do why hearing aid prices went down, 30 million people are going to be able to get hearing aids at a cost that is not $30,300 a pair. those are the types of actions he will continue to take to lower cost. >> we are already overtime. i can't let you go before, as you mentioned the previous president, is the white house worried that donald trump is going to be allowed back on twitter? >> i can't speak to that, i know people there are a lot of conversations about elon musk taking over twitter. i can't speak to any transaction. i can't speak to any business decision that he is going to make or has made. that is a private company platform i'm not gonna speak to that. >> in terms of the impact that would have on the national political discourse? >> right now we are out there every day we are talking to student debt relief we are talking about economic recovery we're talking about the gdp which showed economic growth in the last quarter by 2.6%. it is important inflation going down. people's wages going up all of that is so important that is what the president is focused on. >> you left out the cola increase, highest in 50 years. that is just me. karine jean-pierre, white house press like terry. thank you so much for coming to the sunday show. >> thank, you we appreciated. >> coming, up a nation on edge ahead of the midterms. pelosi's attack stood fears about more attacks and intimidation. we will go through all that after the break. ♪ what will you do? >> jonathan, we should read the warning extremely seriously. this isn't the first time that the dhs or fbi had made this warning. as recently as august they were warning that there was a spike in threats to public servants, an increase in chatter of armed rebellion and civil war. months prior to that they were doing the same. i don't want to scare people, jonathan, but look. right now we are witnessing a large spike in terms of volume towards public servants and we have seen in modern history. i notice the word chatter, that broke into the public lexicon after 9/11 when we talk about terrorists communicating with each other. we are seeing unprecedented levels of domestic terrorism chatter the united states right now. so much so that every fbi field office has an investigation into domestic terrorism across the country. the result? there is been a tenfold increase in threats to members of congress. as marino's, as you know, these people our changing roles because of, it resigning because of it, it is exceptionally serious. it's not just in congress, it is local officials in part of a huge increase in threats. >> miles, how much of this fear of political violence and warnings we are talking about due to donald trump and the republican party? >> in my personal opinion it is a normal enormous. do not just take my word for it, the data shows that this is the case. before donald trump was president, conspiracy theories like qanon were on the fringes of the american political system. now, in the wake of his presidency, polls show that 50% of republicans now believe in the core tenets of qanon. that is absolutely staggering. what does that have to do with political violence? a lot of these individuals who start of these grievances and conspiracy theories and jumped the tracks from violent rhetoric into actual violence. so much so that we are not seeing one in four americans say that they are more predisposed towards political violence and one in ten americans say that they would like to see donald trump forcibly reinstalled in the white house. this is a blinking red light for democracy and i will add one more data point to this, jonathan. two researchers came up with a political stress index to show how polarized we are as a country. their ultimate conclusion? this is the highest level on the political stress index since the american civil war. we are never difficult time and on trump and the wider maga movement have been very actively fanning the flames of political violence so much so that candidates i talked to on the campaign trail are wearing ballistic vests, bulletproof fasts, when they go out and campaign. we just saw a few weeks ago the un sent u.s. senate in utah it was a man was chased by a man a truck who pointed again and he and his wife. this about public servants and potential public servants are facing on the campaign trail. >> i had not heard that, about evan mcmullin. he has been a guest on the show. that is terrifying. mary, i would love to get your response reaction to what miles said. before that, let's listen to what president biden has to say about the attack on paul pelosi. >> you can't condemn the violence unless you condemn those people who continue to argue that the election was not real, that is being stolen, all of the malarkey that is being put out there to undermine democracy. you can't just apologize and say it's just the violence. it affects the mentality, how people think. especially people who are not maybe as stable as other people. >> mary, your response to the president? to miles? what can be done to prevent another attack as happened to paul pelosi, from happening? >> yes, the very same disinformation and lies about the 2020 election which, let's be clear, haven't thoroughly debunked. thrown out of court and every challenge, save one for a very minor point. these thoroughly debunked claims of election fraud, the same disinformation that led to the january 6th attack on the capital is what is fueling these threats. these threats against election workers, against elected officials. threats against people running for elections and voter intimidation. the president is right and will take far more than just the president speaking out about this. inherently, when the president speaks there is a certain number of people who will think it's political. we need elected leaders to come together across the aisle and denounce the violence and disinformation behind it. we just aren't seeing enough of that. the other point i will make his that even though this is being driven, very largely about disinformation. many of the stature coming from the right and to point on that. it's not just the democrats being threatened, republicans are being threatened as well. where stephen the democrats. those on the farthest fringes of the right will denounce republicans who don't see things their way, who don't believe in the election fraud. obviously we have seen threats against the republican members of congress who voted for impeachment, right? most of those are not even running again. they have been driven from office. the other point is that violence breeds violence. even though it is coming, predominantly, from one side of the political spectrum we have plenty of examples of it coming from the opposite side of the political spectrum and the more people, start polling data miles talking about, that is very dangerous. the more people start thinking that violence is unacceptable means of addressing grievances, the more that will happen on both sides. we are at a perilous moment. i also don't want to frighten people off from voting, right? are we going to vote to protect women's reproductive freedom. we passed out in the house, the filibuster is blocking it in the senate. are we going to address with energy the affordability challenges the families across this country are facing? that is really at stake. is about trying to address those issues or relying on the old trump tax cuts for corporations over very wealthy people. a lot of that state for american families in the outcome of the senate election. >> well, congressman, you listen a lot of issues there in that answers. what are voters telling you is their top concern right now? >> in your debate this week, you are opponent clash on the supreme court decision on abortion rights. you recommend term limits for supreme court justices. why? >> we have the worst supreme court since the civil war. essentially they are doing something that is extraordinary and really astonishing. they have taken away the constitutional right that women in this country have enjoyed for 50 years. in doing so they have created a man's additional division in a democracy that is already on a tight rope. term limits, 18 years, would give every president the opportunity to appoint or nominate supreme court candidates. in some extent it would take the politics out. mitch mcconnell thwarted even the consideration of barack obama's nominee. he would have appropriate politics, we have a president elect by the american people would have the opportunity to make two appointees. that i think would take a while to get to rebalance in the court, but i think it is something that would be necessary. >> last question for you, congressman. the attack on speaker pelosi's husband. how concerned are you?
